Once a person realizes she has a problem and needs help to solve it, she has stopped being in denial to herself. Telling ourselves things like, “it’s ok to be hooked on this substance”, or “I’m not addicted I can stop if I want,” or blaming our using on circumstances. So when we experience addiction, it is understandable that without changing our habits, we change our thoughts about our behavior to ease the discomfort. People tend to deal with cognitive dissonance by either changing their thoughts/values or changing their behavior. This may be because it’s too painful or shameful to realize, or because they won’t have to stop if it’s not a problem.Ĭognitive dissonance is a fancy term for the discomfort we feel when our actions do not match up with our thoughts or values. Many people experience a long period of denial in which they are essentially lying to themselves, unable to digest the fact that they are addicted to alcohol or drugs.
